Being Happy – A Hindu Perspective

In the Link above, Jyotish and Devi discuss habits, happiness, spiritual gravity and reincarnation – all from the Hindu perspective from Paramhansa Yogananda’s teachings.
This is a great talk on how to reach the state of pure bliss (primal source.)
Our goal of being Happy all the Time – is really self realization or (Unity with God.)  You could also think of it as Unity with our own soul/self.  All movement towards the origin will produce happiness and all movement away from that will produce unhappiness.

What does that mean: All movement towards the origin produces happiness?

From the tradition of Metaphysics and Spirituality of Paramhansa Yogananda, happiness is rooted in an eternal reality of God/Divinity/Christ Consciousness.  The ego, though, focus’ on the singular state it’s at – on the body at this point in time… who I am in this incarnation.  Now the ego doesn’t wish to return to source… as that is the death of the ego.  It deludes itself into a way of continuing away from source.
Maha delusion – Delusion of separateness. This is necessary to carry on outward creation.  The delusion of separateness allows the creation to keep unfolding.  Without delusion, the soul/mind returns to source.
Outside delusion – Delusion that something outside of “us” will make us happy.  It has some truth, that something outside of us will help (or make us happy), like eating food, having shelter.  But we push beyond that, thinking more and more will make us more happy.  More units of happiness, with the more we get.

Desire – Why it causes Pain

Desire of physical world is a desire of something that is fleeting. It will be lost, as everything here degrades.  Therefore it follows that we will either loose it, see it destroyed or we will die before we can keep it.
Beyond that scope, desire (according to Paramhansa Yogananda) is the force of gravity that pulls the soul back into physical birth.  A desire to live again, see our loved ones, to be rich, to be famous, to be sensual… these desires tug and pull on the soul until it establishes again in the physical realm.
The physical realm is a realm of duality, as such we move from one end to the other (highs and lows.)  This creates pain and depletes peace.
Therefore from this perspective, the way to achieve liberation – is also the way to happiness.

We are born into the world with all our past habits and tendencies trailing behind us.    Our tendencies and dispositions are from our past incarnations.  Environments though, can refocus the habits.  One with dark habits could find peace in the right environment.  One with positive habits could find hate in a negative environment.
The guidelines in scriptures (like the Yamas and Niyamas of Hindusim, and the 10 Commandments of the Bible) are there as a prescription for our spiritual health – to help us stop the things that keep us bound to unhappiness (moving away from source) – and bring us back to source (happiness.)
